The Sing Easy™ is a group voice practice for nervous system awareness, expression and connection through sound.

What is The Sing Easy?

Through breath, movement, resonance, improvisation and simple harmony, participants explore what happens in the voice when they brace, hold back, overwork or begin to find ease. The focus is not performance, but awareness: using the voice as both an instrument and a feedback system for presence, choice, expression and connection.

Each session moves through a flexible series of body-based vocal exercises and short original choruses called “spells.” No music reading or previous singing experience is required. The structures are simple enough to enter immediately, while leaving room for play, contrast, collaboration and the particular energy of each group..

Who is Jess McAvoy?

Jess McAvoy (they/them) is the creator and host of The Sing Easy™, as well as an artist, songwriter, and voice educator. Over more than three decades, they have built an internationally respected career creating original works that invite audiences into more authentic expression. Whether writing songs, performing one-person theatre, or leading communal singing, Jess is known for transforming complex emotional experiences into work that is both artistically compelling and profoundly human.

Why now?

When many of us are spending more our lives online and feeling more disconnected, the Sing Easy™ creates something priceless: a space where people can experience each other without needing to get it right. Singing won't solve everything, but it can remind us that our voices were never meant to exist in isolation, and our voices were made to be heard, even if imperfect.

Why Group Singing Is Becoming a Practice in Nervous System Awareness

NEW YORK, NY — As interest grows in embodied practices that help people move out of their heads and into greater awareness of their internal state, some facilitators are beginning to approach group singing as more than music or entertainment. The Sing Easy™, created by New York voice educator and artist Jess McAvoy, uses breath, movement, vocal resonance, improvisation and simple harmony as a shared practice in nervous system awareness, expression and integration.

Participants are not taught to perfect a song or perform for an audience. Instead, they are invited to notice what happens as they make sound: where they brace, hold back, overwork, disappear or begin to find ease. Short original choruses called “spells” give the room a simple structure through which individual voices can meet, contrast and gradually find harmony.

The experience is accessible to people who do not consider themselves singers, but its purpose reaches beyond beginner singing. It treats the voice as both an instrument and a feedback system—one that can make patterns of effort, protection, choice and connection audible in real time. The result lands somewhere between a voice workshop, a somatic group practice and a living experiment in how people become more integrated in the presence of one another.

Testimonials

  • A friendly community built around sound

“I think The Sing Easy workshops are great both for Shower Sinatras looking to explore group singing and Vocal Vets looking to keep their voices warm and limber. It’s an open and friendly community—at the end of each session, I’ve seen complete strangers grinning ear to ear and connecting over this shared experience of sound.”

    — Bayard, Google Corporate Event The Sing Easy Participant

  • Low-stakes, high-rewards

“I’m terrified of singing. Even at my closest friend’s party, I’ll mouth the words to ‘Happy Birthday’—that’s how insecure I am about my voice.

Jess has created a welcoming environment for a self-identified non-singer to practice singing in public. It’s a great way to drop into a low-pressure community.

This workshop reminded me of the thrill of group performance and the importance of safely failing in front of others. It’s completely low-stakes yet high-rewards. I left feeling more connected, more confident, and more human.

With everything that’s going on in the world, it’s good to have a regular reminder that authentic, healing experiences with strangers are still possible. I’ll definitely come back and bring a friend.”

    — Shea, The Sing Easy Participant and Team Member

  • Yoga for your voice

The Sing Easy feels like yoga for your voice—it's truly an all-levels experience that feels safe and welcoming. It has helped me gain confidence in myself and made singing both approachable and enjoyable. I leave each session feeling refreshed, relaxed, and empowered.”

    — Samm, The Sing Easy Partipant

  • A team-building experience unlike any other

The Sing Easy was a wonderful - and unusual! - cross-functional team building exercise. Within minutes, people visibly relaxed, and by the end of the workshop, there was a warmth and friendliness that I had been unable to create with any other activities. People are still talking about how much fun they had, and how great a bonding experience it was - even people who previously would have insisted they were not interested in anything musical. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a fun outing that helps regulate stressed out nervous systems and bring a little fun into work.”

Time Out New York - Sophia Rubino

“Finding a place to sing comfortable in NYC can be hard. The Sing Easy in Chelsea makes, well, singing easy. On August 26, this queer- and trans-led harmony workshop guided by Australian musician Jess McAvoy is aiming to create a joyful and affirming singing community.

Throughout the night, you'll pick your vocal part and learn an original song which will result in a gorgeous a capella sound-bath. The event is donation-based and is open to all. This night of original music, queer joy and community singing is located at True Voice Studios in Chelsea.”
