THE SEARCH

Who do you think you are? What do you want to become?

The Search is a one-person rock musical that unfolds somewhere between a concert, a reckoning, and a quiet act of defiance. Performed with a live band, Jess McAvoy moves between multiple selves—distinct, contradictory, and deeply human—each one reaching for voice, agency, and a sense of belonging. What begins as a fragmented internal landscape gradually becomes more porous, as these selves interrupt, collide, and, over time, begin to listen to one another.

Drawing from Jess’s experience as a non-binary immigrant artist navigating rejection and reinvention, the piece resists easy resolution. It’s intimate and expansive at once—part gig, part ritual, part unraveling. As the boundaries between the characters soften, the boundary between performer and audience softens. By the end, the room has shifted: what started as observation becomes participation, and the act of finding one’s voice becomes something shared.

“The Search by Jess McAvoy is, simply put, a class act – a 60-minute tour de force that will remain with you for some time. It’s a delight and a rare treat to bear witness to McAvoy’s presence, who is a Brooklyn-based performer originally from Perth.

There’s a purity to The Search, and to McAvoy’s voice, that is rare to come by, and this is something that left a lasting impression with this reviewer.”
