About Jess
“Let me make it easier for you; forget the rest, Jess McAvoy
is one of the best.”
Clem Bastow, The Age
At the tender age of 6, Jess McAvoy decided she wanted to meet Madonna, and in order to do that, she would have to become famous.
She began writing songs when given a guitar for her 11th birthday, and at 14 her debut live performance was at her High School multi cultural talent night. By 16 her parents had to chaperone when she performed in Bars and Pubs. At 19, Jess McAvoy released her first recording to the public, and a sell out audience at the Grosvenor hotel in Perth.
Jess relocated to Melbourne from Perth in 1999, and played a heap of well received gigs, toured with Ani diFranco and The Waifs and released two further EP's “Four Short Stories” (2001) which garnered Triple J and Rage airplay.
Other supports included New Zealand’s Brooke Fraser, Ember Swift (CAN), Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set, Pete Murray, Kate Ceberano, Tim Rogers and Tex Perkins and Old Man River.
In 2004 Jess released “En Masse”, an ambitious projet that featured over 50 musicians from all around the country, to glowing reviews across Australia, and strong support from national and local radio stations.
2005 took her to Los Angeles and New York which included shows at the Bitter End, CBGB’s, Arlene’s Grocery and the Knitting Factory.
Jess released her album "Into The
Dark"in August 2006, recorded with Aria award winner Marty Brown (Clare Bowditch,
Art of Fighting) to rave reviews; including a sell out album launch at
the Northcote social club in Melbourne, a full house at the Hopetoun in Sydney, Four
and a half stars in the Age and album of the week in Beat Magazine.
The release of Into the Dark marked her emergance from a dark period in her life, where all was a little unfocussed. Since leaving Perth Jess had put out 5 recordings that were all going to be "The one that makes me famous" However her lack of planning and honesty prevented this from happening. 2006 became the year that Jess began to enjoy music for the gift that it is. Jess considers Into the Dark, her 7th record, very much- her debut album.
Jess is currently writing for her follow up to Into the Dark which will be recorded with Marty Brown in March- for a mid 2008 release. She is yet to meet Madonna, however her ambitons have since changed, a true love of music taking up her central focus. And about time too.
Jess is a fully independent artist and owns her own record company "Henduwin Music".
Here's what the critics have to say ...
... About "Into the Dark"
This is truly a beautiful release. Into the Dark not only crystallizes
the gorgeous melancholy of her songwriting, but finally does justice to
that wonderful frayed beauty in her voice, that husk versus honey, and the
raw introspection of her lyrics. An album to treasure.
Nick Snelling, Beat Magazine
Four and a half stars
Just as the CD store racks are teeming with earnest surfy blokes with slide
guitars and angst-ridden bands of faux punks sporting eyeliner and technicolour
tattoos, it can be hard to sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to
rootsy female singer-songwriters.
Let me make it easier for you: forget the rest, Jess McAvoy is one of the
best. On Into the Dark, her second full-length record as a wholly independent
artist, McAvoy provides a stunning spectrum of songs and emotions. Bookended
by the gorgeous Easy and More Words, the album explores the many facets
of love and life, and most listeners will find more than a few songs resonating
personally.
The title track's arrangement is a gorgeous blend of Je t'aime (Moi Non
Plus) and Breakfast in Bed, as a lazy organ hums beneath McAvoy's velvety
voice and plinking guitar. Apart from her astute songwriting, it's McAvoy's
voice that steals the show - equal parts Chrissie Hynde, Dusty Springfield
and beautiful Australian country babe - no chaff in sight.

...About En Masse
**** 4 stars. McAvoy has a polished collection of self-penned works, whose acoustic groove will silence even the loudest bar fly into submission.
